About National Geospatial Partnerships
The National Map partnership network cultivates and maintains long-term relationships with partners and develops agreements for The National Map and other initiatives that support USGS science. Partnerships are the foundation The National Map because they leverage funding across organizations to provide significant cost savings, reduce redundancy in geospatial data acquisition and stewardship, and ensure availability of common base data to a broad range of users and applications.

Liaison Activities

Fiscal Year 2012 Highlights

Agreements

      Elevation

  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Alaska Department of Transportation - Partnership to acquire over 81,361 square miles of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (ifsar) acquisition to support processing of a mid-accuracy digital elevation model with 20-foot contour bare earth data to support multiple studies including flood analysis and response, vegetation mapping, structures mapping, land use planning, and habitat modeling by providing data for analysis.
  • National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the city of Juneau - Partnership to acquire over 143 square miles of lidar over Juneau to support multiple studies including flood analysis and response, vegetation mapping, structures mapping, land use planning, and habitat modeling by providing data for analysis.
  • U.S. Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the National Park Service - Partnership to acquire over 11,678 square miles of ifsar over the Copper River and Glacier Bay National Parks to support multiple studies including flood analysis and response, vegetation mapping, structures mapping, land use planning, and habitat modeling by providing data for analysis.
  • National Park Service - Partnership to acquire over 11 square miles of lidar and high-resolution imagery over Kijik to support multiple studies including flood analysis and response, vegetation mapping, structures mapping, land use planning, and habitat modeling by providing data for analysis.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - Partnership to acquire over 193 square miles of ifsar over North Slope Admiralty Bay to support multiple studies including flood analysis and response, vegetation mapping, structures mapping, land use planning, and habitat modeling by providing data for analysis.

      Hydrography

  • University of Alaska Southeast - Stewardship project to update the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) covering portions of southeast and southcentral Alaska by integrating four discrete agencies' hydrography datasets.

FGDC CAP Grant Support

  • State of Alaska, Department of Transportation & Public Facilities - (Category 1: Metadata Trainer and Outreach Assistance) - Properly cataloguing existing and acquired geospatial data is a significant factor in executing the Alaska geospatial strategic plan and uniform metadata standards training (ISO 19115) across business lines; this is a significant step in coordinating Alaska-oriented geospatial holdings and practices. The outcome of this project will be a uniformly applied metadata standard voluntarily adopted and utilized by the stakeholders.

Other Activities

  • Science Support - Assisted USGS biology, geology, and water scientists in obtaining imagery, elevation, and other geospatial data.
  • 3D Elevation Program Inventory - Validated information on known datasets and documented new datasets to update the national inventory of high-resolution elevation data - http://www.csc.noaa.gov/inventory/.
  • Outreach – Conducted and coordinated National Geospatial Program outreach activities by attending a range of meetings, participating in conferences, and coordinating trainings and workshops to support the geospatial community in the State.
  • Emergency Response – Liaisons provide general geospatial data discovery and acquisition assistance during emergencies as those events occur throughout the fiscal year.
